Job Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Curator, the Senior Curator of Photographs leads the vision for the Photographs Collection; plans and directs development of the Photographs Collection; recommends photographs and related works for acquisition establishing their authenticity, art historical and aesthetic significance; approves priorities and jointly approves projects with other members of the Gallery; recommends treatments for the conservation of works of photographs; directs the installation of the permanent collection, plans and directs research for the organization of major exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, upon the approval, researches, and directs the organization of major exhibitions; researches, writes and prepares exhibition related publications and didactic materials; provides leadership to the department’s curators; develops and maintains a national and international professional networks of peers and colleagues; actively contributes to outreach, partnerships, development and donor relations.



Requirements

Education

• PhD in art history, the history of photography or the equivalent

Experience

• Minimum of 10 years of demonstrated experience in the fields of art historical research in photographs, collection building and work in an art museum;
• Minimum of 10 years of experience writing manuscripts and documents for exhibitions, lectures, publications such as exhibition catalogues, scholarly monographs, educational and promotional material, corporate documents and new media text related to photography;
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in research;
• Experience managing and supervising employees (managing in a unionized environment is an asset) [Note that internal experience will be taken into consideration];
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in donor cultivation.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Specialized knowledge of internationally accepted scholarly requirements and conventions of cataloguing and documenting photographs;
• Knowledge of NGC collection and, specially, in-depth knowledge of the Photographs Collection;
• Knowledge of history of photography and art;
• Knowledge of internationally accepted preservation and conservation procedures and policies;
• Knowledge of museum environmental standards and the ability to analyse their implications for the management of NGC collection;
• Advanced research skills to identify and locate photographs for acquisition and collection;
• Thorough knowledge of preventive conservation principles and practices and their development;
• Ability to select, analyse and synthesize information derived from varying sources including photographs, archives, interviews and other primary and secondary sources;
• Ability to integrate global culture into both collection and exhibition plans;
• Ability to motivate, engage, communicate and lead a team of curatorial staff;
• Advanced writing and editorial skills in both official languages;
• Ability to coordinate, control and organize multiple functions and activities;
• Knowledge of current exhibition methodologies, installations and practices;
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
• A high degree of initiative, good judgment and the ability to work well under pressure;
• Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines;
• Ability to work independently and as a team member;
• Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
